Last night, Washington Heights was the place to be, but not only because of all the parties celebrating Dominican Republics Independence day. It also marked the first of many “Dassit Open Mic” nights to come; hosted by Joseph S.U.N Hernandez at The Dyckman Bar. The event was definitely a huge success, judging from the packed crowd and the amount of times I was told excuse me so someone could pass by. But seriously though, the performances were amazing. After each act I appreciated more and more that so many people were there to support each of these artist. Plus the eye-opening and even comedic poems recited by S.U.N in-between. The amount of talent in there was crazy!. It was enough to fill the room. Speakers of the House came out from Yonkers to show off their truly gifted way with words and recited a moving piece. Storm, hailing from the boogie down gave everyone a soulful vibe to rock with all night, with her goose-bump giving performance of a couple of songs off of her album.  The night was closed out by the Heights very own up and coming rap group The Machine. They killed it. Lyrically, these guys came through with strong punch lines and even greater messages, laid over dope beats. I was impressed, and even more hype that the group has a female artist!!! As a woman, of course I was going to be excited about that lol and you guys will definitely hear more of all these artist on upcoming Jayska Flashlight news reports.       All in all, I give the green light for this event and would say its a must you attend the next; which will be every last Wednesday of the Month. I’m excited for the next show and hope to see some new faces in the crowd (and of course hit the stage). So next time come out and show some love, ok? Dassit!!!
